Sonoma alums Daly, Preckwinkle helping keep Sol soccer alive

Open field

Jun 6, 2011 - 01:41 PM

It was only two years ago that three Sonoma Valley High School alumni and former prep and collegiate standouts – Scott Preckwinkle (2004), Mickey Daly (2005) and Chris Daly (2000) – were key members of the Sonoma County Sol men’s semi-pro soccer team that captured the National Premier Soccer League championship after winning league and regional titles.

But, at the same time they achieved their successful season and won the national crown, the Sonoma County Sol lost their board of directors and were stuck with a large debt, which was happening to so many other athletic organizations during the economic crisis.

Despite the off-field stress, the Sonoma Sol has kept up their winning ways on the field, with team-members running the men’s soccer squad and Sonoma’s Chris Daly serving as both captain and vice-president, while continuing to play alongside Preckwinkle. His brother, Mickey (Daly), is currently living and playing in Southern California.

Also helping to keep the Sonoma County Sol operating is Chris’s mother, Valley resident Carolyn Daly, who assisted the team in putting together Friday’s soccer golf fundraiser at the Oakmont Golf Course in Santa Rosa.

As the Sonoma Sol makes its push toward the postseason playoffs, there are still three regular-season games remaining and the county semi-pro organization can use as much local support as possible, so attend a match, or two, or three, and enjoy some high-level soccer action.

The three matches, all starting at 5 p.m. and taking place at Sonoma State University, are on Saturday, June 18, Sunday, June 19, and Saturday, June 25. For more information on the Sonoma County Sol, contact Chris Daly at 319-7331, or chris15ssu@hotmail.com.
