As Babe Ruth Baseball District 2 champions, the Sonoma Valley 15- and 14-year-old all-star teams opened the challenging NorCal State double-elimination tournaments over the weekend and they each had split-decisions after two rounds.

At Bartholomew Sports Park in Elk Grove, Sonoma’s 15-year-old all-stars opened the NorCal State championships with a thrilling 5-2 nine-inning victory over District 7-champion Woodland on Saturday, but then dropped a one-sided 19-4 decision to strong District 3 champion Vallejo on Sunday.

Leading the Sonoma all-star 15s past Woodland were Damian Sanchez’s hit, two RBIs and one run scored; Cole Harper’s hit and RBI; Richard Nunez’s hit and run; a hit each by John Murphy, Andrew DeMartini and starting pitcher (five innings) Jimmy Flatt; Miles Hagin’s and Garrett Walker’s run apiece; and winning pitcher (four innings) Mike Stovall.

In the loss to Vallejo, the Valley stars were paced by Nunez’s hit and two RBIs; DeMartini’s two hits; Hagin’s one hit; and Max Schimm’s run.

Sonoma’s District 2 champion 14-year-old all-stars opened NorCal State tourney play with an 11-0 shutout of District 1 champion Eel River at Clark Field in Woodland on Saturday, before being nipped 7-6 by District 7 champion East Sacramento on Sunday.

In Sunday’s game, Sonoma’s 14-year-old all-star pitcher Ronnie Cotter was hit in the face by a batted ball and ended up in a University of California, Davis, hospital with a broken nose and orbital fractures, which won’t require surgery. He was released from the hospital and returned to his Valley home yesterday.

The Sonoma all-star 15s and 14s played elimination games against Washington Manor and Palo Alto, respectively, yesterday, with the results not available at presstime.
