Sonoma - A Place to Stay and Play
By Mary Courtney

What is the inspiration for you to want to move to Sonoma?  Are you looking for an established community with a small town atmosphere?  A place where you can enjoy the warmth and serenity of living in a welcoming neighborhood, surrounded by natural beauty?  You want to be close to a metropolitan area yet “miles away”, a place to call home?  It’s all here and so much more.

Living in Sonoma you can keep busy with the many activities, or if you choose simply enjoy the climate and beauty within your own quiet garden.  The choice is yours to make.

Here are a few favorite pastimes in our Valley:

Bocce Ball - A rather simple game, very old in tradition, and one that is easily learned and fun to play.

In Depot Park, a block north of the Plaza, there are established bocce ball courts. Sonoma’s Bocce Ball League is sponsored by the Sonoma Sister Cities Association, but on any day when the courts are empty anyone can come to play, you just need your own equipment, the courts are ready.  There is a large bulletin board where the schedule is posted for league’s games, any other time you are welcome to use the courts. Why not join the league? There is always room for new players.

Hiking and biking - With trails set throughout the area there is plenty of space to roam.   For your first hike, and to get a nice view of the town, go to the end of First St. West, just beyond the Veteran’s Building where you will see a sign with the “Overlook Trail” marked.  It is about a 2-mile loop trail and relatively easy for all hikers.

A bike ride to Bartholomew Park, a somewhat different setting, and one that could end at their wine tasting room, is also a great place to go. There are several trails throughout the park with a signboard to show the way.

Theater - Local theater is definitely alive and well in the area.  Many fine productions by the Sonoma Theater Alliance are presented at the Community Center. Their Summer Theater Season 2011 is underway, with four full-length plays and another seven smaller productions scheduled.

At our historic and beautifully restored Sebastiani Theater you can enjoy classic cinema and first run films, as well as musical and theatrical performances.

Music - Many of the local wineries present live music all summer long.  One night a month, at the Farmer’s Market, the Sonoma Jazz Society presents live jazz performances. Several other venues in town have live music most nights of the week including live jazz at the Plaza Bistro Restaurant.

There is truly much to be seen and done in this community. This is but a small listing of opportunities for you to consider, just enough to whet your appetite.

Won’t you join us?
