A tough season that didn’t produce a win, but showed continued progress, ended for Sonoma Valley High School’s young boys’ golf team at Monday’s Sonoma County League championship tournament at the Oakmont West Golf Course in Santa Rosa.

With only two seniors, the Dragons battled hard at the SCL tourney, but still finished in seventh-place with an 18-hole team-score of 484, with Casa Grande’s 415 winning the league title, followed in the final standings by Healdsburg’s 444, Analy’s 454, Petaluma’s 459, Windsor’s 466, and El Molino’s 478.

Individually, Sonoma was led by senior A.J. Vitorelo’s fine round of 84 – earning him a seventh-place overall finish – junior RAB Byrd’s solid round of 89, freshman Dario Minatta’s 101, sophomore Craig Gusse’s 102, and sophomore Brian Hurley’s 108.

Rounding out the Dragon golfers’ roster, directed by longtime coach Tom Hickerson, were senior Connor Sullivan; juniors Tyler Johnson and Eamon Shine; sophomore Justin Crockett; and frosh Jacob Bollman, Garrett O’Brien and Riley Rohrbacher.

“We had a young team that lacked experience, but we did better as the season went on, and the guys gained valuable experience for future success,” said Hickerson. “For A.J. (Vitorelo), it was tough being our only match-experienced golfer, but he continued to put up good scores and just missed returning to North Coast Section for a second-straight season.”

Sonoma’s first-place baseball boys, who played at nonleague Novato yesterday – results not available at presstime – travel to Petaluma today for a crucial 4 p.m. SCL showdown with longtime rival Casa Grande, before the Dragons return home to host league foe Analy at 7 p.m. in this Tuesday’s, May 10, home finale at Arnold Field. Before the first pitch, Sonoma will honor their seniors.
