VALLEY'S SAL CHAVEZ drives to the basket for the Dragons at Pfeiffer Gym during his standout all-league 2003-04 senior season at Sonoma Valley High School. Chavez and his Pro-Am NorCal hoops squad will face the Bay Area Matrix, a professional team and defending champion of the American Basketball Association's California Division, in tomorrow night's, Saturday, July 30, fundraising game in Pfeiffer Gym, with the event benefiting the SVHS boys' basketball program.
Having competed at the prep, college, amateur and pro levels in his favorite sport of basketball, Salvador Chavez wanted to give something back to Sonoma Valley High School, where he began his competitive hoops career, and also to the Valley where he grew up.
So Chavez has organized a pro-level hoops game which is fundraising event for the SVHS boys' basketball program, and will take place at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, July 30, in Pfeiffer Gym, with the doors opening at 5:30 for pre-game festivities which will include an autograph and photo session. There will also be a dunk contest and three-point shooting competition.
Chavez - a 2004 SVHS graduate and former Dragon all-league standout who went on to play at Napa Valley College and in a professional league in Mexico - and his current Pro-Am team NorCal, which competes in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, will play the professional Bay Area Matrix, the American Basketball Association's California Division defending champion.
"I wanted to bring professional-level basketball to the Valley for an eventful evening which will help the high school during these tough economic times for schools and entertain everyone with a high quality game and exciting dunk and three-point shooting contests," said Chavez.
Tickets are $10 pre-sale, $15 at the door, and can be purchased at two Valley restaurants - the Shiso Sushi & Grill, 19161 Sonoma Highway, and Picazo Café & Deli, 19100 Arnold Drive.

This is a wonderful story about a local Sonoma resident who has blossom into an extraordinary individual. Played Basketball at all Levels and is giving back to his Alma Mater and hometown. I was fortunate to encounter his talents in the AAU Basketball Circuit and I'm really excited for what Salvador Chavez has accomplished. Keep doing diligent work Mr. Chavez because one of these days, there will be a statue of you in front of Pfeiffer Gym, just like Magic Johnson has his in front of the Staples Center.
Kudos,
Former AAU Coach
