SSI could happen to you
Editor, Index-Tribune:
California has just cut Supplemental Security Income for the destitute disabled for the fourth time in the last two years. Anyone receiving SSI is officially listed as "very, very low income," living well below the poverty line.
These people, if single, must live in Section 8 housing, rely on free food to get through each month and are denied the use of food stamps. Despite having had two successful careers for many years, I have lost my home and all my valuables because of having to fight a succession of autoimmune diseases since 1988. Times are very rough right now for everyone, but for the disabled who cannot help themselves they are especially daunting and discouraging.
Please write to as many public officials as you can to demand just income for those afflicted by disease which has put them in this impossible economic bracket. Consider that these circumstances can happen to anyone, even you. Donate healthful food to free food banks generously, and consider becoming a driver for FISH to take patients to local doctor appointments. Thank you.
