Woodland Star Charter School students, parents, grandparents and administrator joined thousands of other athletes and competed in the Pacific Grove Sprint Triathlon near Monterey on Sept. 11. Thirty one athletes from Woodland Star trained the past four months with practice swims at Aquatic Park in San Francisco, bike rides up Lovall Valley Road and running around the Plaza and downtown. These athletes, as young as 11 years old, swam in 55 degree ocean water above a kelp bed, biked and ran along Lovers Point of Pacific Grove, Calif.
Eleven year old Jenna Ebert took second place overall in the Womens 11/12 year age category with a time of 1:31:52. 12 year old Nils Waterfield earned a sixth place finish with his time of 1:32:10 in the Mens 11/12 group. In the Mens 13-15 category, 13 year old Connor Ebert placed eighth with a time of 1:26:31 and 14 year old Delaney Brumme's time of 1:31:18 earned him a ninth place finish.
Top Woodland Star parent finishers in the Mens category were Jason Sutter, Steve Chiurco and Fred Ebert. The top finishing women included Mara Lee Ebert, Karen Cahill and Emilie Leen.
In addition to all their training, each athlete is attempting to raise a minimum of $1,000 each, which will be donated to Woodland Star to support the school budget. Triathletes include John Arntz, Sean Balderama, Paul Benson, Kristine Benson, Nadine Best, Michael Brady, Amanda Brumme, Delaney Brumme (14), Nicole Cabaud, Mike Cahill, Karen Cahill, Anastatia Chiurco, Steve Chiurco, Monica Conway, Shannon DeWees, Sara Donnelley, Fred Ebert, Mara Lee Ebert, Connor Ebert (13), Jenna Ebert (11), Andy French, Liz Jimenez, Emilie Leen, Margot Philips, Sheila Reilly, Matt Seveneau, Jason Sutter, Mark Walden, Nils Waterfield (12) and Marias Yap.
