Rentz to join dad in SVHS HOF
Open Field
Following in her father's footsteps, though as an athlete and not a coach, Joanna Rentz is a member of the fourth class of Sonoma Valley High School alumni to be honored by their induction into the "Dragon Hall of Fame" this Saturday night, May 7, at the Lodge at Sonoma, 1325 Broadway.
Last year, her father, David Rentz, was a member of the third class (2010) of SVHS Hall of Famers and was inducted as a D.A. Pfeiffer Coaches Award recipient after successfully coaching basketball and volleyball, in which he guided the Lady Dragon spikers to multiple Sonoma County League and North Coast Section titles.
One of David's star players from the late 1990s and early 2000s was his middle daughter, Joanna, who was arguably the best-ever all-around Lady Dragons' volleyball player. She went on to receive an athletic scholarship to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, where she was an impact player.
Along with Joanna, Sonoma's 2011 Hall of Fame class will include former coaches Stan Augustine and Roger Winslow receiving the D.A. Pfeiffer Coaches Award; and Dragon athletes Gary Ellison, Dave Hinton and Jim Scribner from the 1950s; Mary Ann Garlick from the 1960s; Kori Schake and Jim Woods from the 1970s; Tony Edwards and Nancy Hafterson from the 1980s; Sara Jakel and Adam Soldati from the 1990s; and Tom Everidge will join Rentz as the first inductees from the 2000s.
In honor of Mitch Mulas - one of the Valley's most-loved and respected community leaders, who recently died at the age of 84 - and his family, SVHS's Athletic Hall of Fame created the Mulas Family Recognition Award.
The award honors those people, families or businesses who have contributed time and/or resources to ensure our Valley's students, athletes and coaches have the additional support necessary to have successful seasons and experiences.
This year's recipients of the Mulas Family Recognition Award will be a so-worthy Joe and Diane Lunny.
Saturday's popular Dragon Hall of Fame evening will begin with no-host cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and induction ceremonies at 7 p.m.
Tickets - which are $85 each and tax deductible - can be ordered by sending a check and self-addressed stamped return envelope to: Dragon Hall of Fame, c/o Vicky Mulas (Mitch's daughter), P.O. Box 1524, Sonoma, CA 95476.
