R&B tops Heffernan to win men’s Benny hoops regular-season title, top-seed for playoffs

After a recent short stall, R&B Custom Builders got back on the Sonoma Valley Men’s Recreational Basketball’s Jack Benny (39-and-over) Sunday Night League’s first-place road and completed their drive to the regular-season title Sunday night at the Altimira Middle School gym.

With a 64-48 victory over second-place Heffernan Insurance Brokers, R&B not only won the regular season, but secured the top-seed in the postseason playoffs, which open this Sunday night, April 10. Second-seed Heffernan will face third-seed La Salette at 6, and the Brokers play fourth-seed Patt’s Copy World at 7 p.m.

The Jack Benny League playoff championship showdown is at 7 p.m. Sunday evening, April 17, at Altimira, with the consolation game set for 6 p.m.

In Sunday’s regular-season finales, R&B Custom Builders (13-2) were led past Heffernan Insurance Brokers (11-4) by Brian Thomas’ game-high 28 points, Steve Rowland’s 12, Ron Hall’s 11, Al Martinson’s six, Larry Philpot’s three and Gary McKinnon’s and Danny Dwyer’s two each. Heffernan was paced by Jerome Baker’s 17 points, Joe Neely’s 15, Clem Moore’s 11, Pete Ahern’s three and Steve Matuszak’s two.

La Salette (8-7) defeated Patt’s Copy World (7-8) 51-38, led by Aaron Smith’s game-high 26 points, Kenton Lewis’ 11, Don Fowler’s nine, Scott Dykstra’s three and Mike Glasbrenner’s two. Pacing Patt’s Copy were Mike Brennan’s 12 points, Dan Flohr’s 10, Jim Hess’ nine, Scott Summers’ four and Mark Fidler’s three.

Murphy’s Irish Pub (6-9) topped Vegas (0-15) 58-36, led by Dave Chappell’s 15 points with three treys, Jeff Kellogg’s and Rich Tunheim’s eight apiece, Beni Comma’s six, John Malinowski’s five, Jamie Svanda’s four and Dan Sooter’s and Eric Jorgensen’s two each. Vegas was paced by Jason Campbell’s game-high 17 points – including five treys – Ryan McCracken’s eight, Tyler Nethaway’s four, Jack Ayers’ three and Bob Molesworth’s and Joe Kirkwood’s two apiece.
