R&B still one ahead of Heffernan for 1st in men’s Benny hoops
After their two recent and only losses of the season, the first-place R&B Custom Builders are back on the winning track in the Sonoma Valley Men’s Recreational Basketball’s Jack Benny (39-and-over) Sunday Night League, but they still hold only a slim one-game lead over the hard-charging second-place Heffernan Insurance Brokers.
With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Jack Benny League’s four playoff teams have been decided as R&B and Heffernan – battling for the regular-season title and top-seed – will be joined in the postseason by Patt’s Copy and La Salette, who are vying for the third-seed.
In Sunday night’s games at the Altimira Middle School gym, R&B Custom Builders (11-2) defeated Vegas (0-13) 68-34, led by Al Martinson’s game-high 20 points, Brian Thomas’ 13, Gary McKinnon’s and Ron Luddy’s 10 each, Larry Philpot’s six, Steve Rowland’s five, and Danny Dwyer’s and Ron Hall’s two apiece. Vegas was paced by Ryan McCracken’s 17 points, Jason Campbell’s 11 with three treys, Joe Kirkwood’s four, and Matt Ingersoll’s and Brian Carlson’s two each.
Heffernan Insurance Brokers (10-3) upended Patt’s Copy World (7-6) 58-51 in overtime, led by Joe Neely’s 15 points – including his first trey of the season that sent the game into overtime – Kevin Jaggie’s 14, Clem Moore’s 13, Jerome Baker’s eight, Brian Stephenson’s five, Steve Matuszak’s two and Pete Ahern’s one. Pacing Patt’s Copy were Mark Fidler’s game-high 16 points with four treys, Dave Studdert’s 15, Jim Hess’ eight, Mike Brennan’s seven and Dan Flohr’s five.
La Salette (7-6) beat Murphy’s Irish Pub (4-9) 66-22, led by Aaron Smith’s game-high 18 points, Don Fowler’s and Scott Dykstra’s 10 apiece, Kevin Tishburne’s eight, Kenton Lewis’ six, Mike Glasbrenner’s and Don Codding’s four each, and Manny Azevedo’s two. Murphy’s was paced by Jeff Kellogg’s game-high 18 points, Jamie Svanda’s 12, Rich Tunheim’s and Dave Chappell’s 16 points with four treys, and Dan Sooter’s six.

On Sunday, March 13, R&B Custom Builders (10-2) toppled Patt’s Copy World (7-5) 76-54, led by Martinson’s game-high 23 points – including five treys – Rowland’s 18, Thomas’ 16, Dwyer’s eight, McKinnon’s seven and Philpot’s four. Pacing Patt’s Copy were Flohr’s 20 points, Brennan’s 19, Fidler’s eight and Scott Summers’ seven.
Heffernan Insurance Brokers (9-3) edged Murphy’s Irish Pub (4-8) 53-48, led by Jaggie’s 15 points, Devin Ajax’s 12, Stephenson’s eight, Mark Burningham’s seven, Baker’s five, Moore’s four and Ahern’s two. The Pub was paced by Jeff Kellogg’s game-high 18 points, Jamie Svanda’s 12, Rich Tunheim’s and Chappell’s six each, Eric Jorgensen’s five and Sooter’s one.
La Salette (6-6) downed Vegas (0-12) 70-35, led by Smith’s game-high 23 points with three treys, Fowler’s 20, Lewis’ 12, Dykstra’s nine and Glasbrenner’s six. Pacing Vegas were Edwin Hidalgo’s 18 points – including four treys – Mike Stovall’s nine, Gary Johnson’s four, and Jay Ashe’s and Jack Ayers’ two apiece.
