Programming new sign

Mar 24, 2011 - 09:05 PM
Glenn Moll, assistant principal at Altimira Middle School, programs the new electric display sign Monday. The new sign, which cost about $12,000, was paid for by the Associated Student Body and the Parent Network. It replaces a sign that was homemade years ago and was falling apart. Principal Will Deeths emphasized that no taxpayer money was used to purchase the sign.

It is an ugly sign which creates a visual hazard and distraction not far from where a deadly head-on accident occured a several years ago.

In addition, Arnold Drive is a scenic area and this sign seriously detracts from the surronding area. As we have seen before, the SVUSD does not give a rip about local residents or the environment.

I find the new sign to be quite tacky. And it doesn't matter that the money did not come from taxpayers. If the school can raise $12,000 for something that looks like it belongs in a carnival then they certainly should be raising money for all the programs that have been cut and the teachers who have been "laid off". The sign is a prime example of why we are in such a financial/educational mess. Every time I drive by that sign, as I am bouncing through the potholes I wonder about priorities in this country. There are kids in that school who need many things, but not a flashing neon sign.
