For a talented group of recently graduated Redwood Empire high school seniors, Saturday night’s 38th Richard Bigham Memorial Senior All-Star Football Game at Santa Rosa High School’s Ernie Nevers Field provided, for most of them, one final chance to play with or against each other in front of friends and local fans.
With both the North Bay League and Sonoma County League all-star teams putting on another exciting grid show in the Kiwanis Club of Santa Rosa’s annual midsummer benefit grid classic, the NBL stars scored with just under two minutes to go and held on to nip the SCL all-stars 31-28.
Playing for the SCL all-stars were 2011 Sonoma Valley High School graduates Sean Daly, Joey Casias, Omar Paz and Ray Mellinger.
As a Dragon during the 2010 season, Daly earned SCL first-team all-league honors as an outside linebacker, while Casias was a second-team all-league defensive back, Paz was a second-team all-league defensive lineman, and Mellinger was a second-team all-league offensive lineman.
