Margarett Ruth Derrington
Margarett Ruth Derrington
Margarett Ruth Derrington passed away peacefully at her home in Sonoma, on April 16, 2011. To our knowledge, she was always 17 years old.
Margarett was born Jan. 21, 1935, in Portales, N.M., and was the eldest of six children. She moved with her family to San Pablo, in 1943.
She met Jimmy Derrington and fell in love on the same day. He was in the Navy and was being shipped out to sea. He wrote her and asked her to marry him when he returned. She accepted and they married on Jan. 10, 1953 - a union which has lasted more than 56 years. She was a homemaker and Jimmy's business partner for her entire life as proprietor of Derrington's Chevron Station (1959-1999 and muffler shop and GMC car dealership).
Margarett loved to sing. She had a voice of gold. She would sing for weddings and church services. She could also be caught walking around the house singing. She loved missionary work at The Church of God of Prophecy and held every office in the church including deaconess. She was known for her cooking - especially her lasagna.
Margarett was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents, Everett and Gurtie Stroup; and her brother, Billy Stroup.
She was the loving mother of Larry Derrington (Tedi) and Zandra Ross (Jeff); idolized "Granny" to Larry Derrington II, Travis Derrington and Zack and Cody Ross; sister to Paul, Jimmy and Bobby Stroup and Elwanda LeMay. She is also survived by her nieces, Yovonna Robinson (Jim) and Amber Dawson (James); and great nieces and a great nephew. She is dearly missed by her family and friends, but they take comfort in knowing she has been reunited with her husband for eternity.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Duggan's Mission Chapel, 525 W. Napa St., Sonoma, CA 95476.
