It was a busy end of the week for Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity volleyball girls, who rebounded from their heartbreaking five-game loss to defending Sonoma County League champion Analy in last Tuesday’s SCL opener in Sebastopol by defeating league foe Healdsburg in four games Thursday evening at Pfeiffer Gym.
Then on Saturday, the Lady Dragons posted a 3-1 record in their own annual Greg Paganini Invitational Tournament – held in honor of Greg Paganini, a longtime, devoted Sonoma girls’ volleyball supporter and father of two former standout Dragon players – with Maria Carrillo winning the tourney title over runner-up Casa Grande.
Sparked by all-tournament selection senior setter Jersey Witous, Sonoma defeated San Rafael 25-11, 25-10, led by freshman Delaney Swanson’s eight kills; senior Karly Burningham’s seven digs; senior Alissa Thomas’ six serving aces; frosh Mackenzie Albrecht’s four digs and three kills; Witous’ two aces; and senior Karisa Hess’ block.
Leading the Lady Dragons to their 25-19, 25-21 win over Liberty were Burningham’s 11 digs and two aces; Witous’ nine digs and three blocks; Albrecht’s seven kills and Swanson’s four; and Hess’ four blocks.
Sonoma was led in its 25-18, 25-16 victory over Rancho Cotate by Witous’ 12 digs, three aces and two blocks; Burningham’s seven digs; Swanson’s six kills and Hess’ three; and Albrecht’s three aces.
In their lone 26-28, 22-25 loss to University, the Lady Dragons were paced by Burningham’s 14 digs; Witous’ 13 digs, five kills and two blocks; five kills each by Swanson, Albrecht and senior Gabby Petersen; and Thomas’ ace.
Leading Sonoma to its 23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 SCL win over Healdsburg were Witous’ 32 assists and two aces; Burningham’s 23 digs; junior Taryn Mak’s 20 digs and six assists; Albrecht’s 15 kills; Swanson’s nine kills; Petersen’s five solo blocks and one assisted block; junior Allyson Beckwith’s three solo blocks and one assisted block; and Thomas’ three aces.
The Lady Dragon spikers play at SCL foe Windsor tonight, before hosting league rival Casa Grande this Thursday, Sept. 22, in Pfeiffer Gym, with the frosh starting at 4, the junior varsity at 5, and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
