Off to an upbeat start to their 2011 season, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity volleyball girls won their second straight nonleague match in impressive fashion with their three-game sweep of visiting Justin-Siena last Thursday in Pfeiffer Gym.

The Lady Dragons’ 25-17, 25-15, 25-17 victory over Justin-Siena came on the heels of their thrilling five-game win over Tamalpais in Mill Valley last Tuesday.

Sonoma’s 2011 varsity volleyball team, directed by head coach Mindy Neves, consists of seniors Jersey Witous, Karly Burningham, Gabby Petersen, Karissa Hess and Alissa Thomas; juniors Allyson Beckwith, Taryn Mak and Alexis Long-Am; and freshmen MacKenzie Albrecht and Delaney Swanson.

Leading the Lady Dragons past Justin-Siena were setter Witous’ 32 assists, 17 digs, five kills and one block; libero Burningham’s 16 digs; Petersen’s seven kills and four blocks; and Swanson’s seven kills, Hess’ six and Albrecht’s five.

In their 22-25, 25-12, 25-12, 19-25 and 15-9 win over Tamalpais, the Lady Dragons were led by Witous’ 39 assists, Burningham’s 35 digs, and Petersen’s and Swanson’s 10 kills each.

The Sonoma girl spikers continue nonleague play at Terra Linda tonight, before hosting Napa – which is coached by both former SVHS head coach and Dragon Hall of Fame honoree David Rentz and his daughter and SVHS grad and former all-league standout Natalie (Rentz) Dusak – this Thursday, Sept. 8, in Pfeiffer Gym. Thursday’s matches begin with the freshmen at 4, the junior varsity start at 5, and the varsity play at 6:30 p.m.

OF NOTE: Half of Justin-Siena’s starting lineup are student-athletes from Sonoma, including Adrien Raffin, Kelly Buscher and Harper Sawicki.
