Lady Dragon softballers fall to Petaluma

May 2, 2011 - 02:55 PM

In their first Sonoma County League meeting, Sonoma Valley High School's varsity softball girls were overwhelmed on the road by perennial-power Petaluma.

Both teams met last Thursday at the high school field for their second and final time in the SCL's regular season and the young and improving Lady Dragons jumped out to a 3-1 first-inning lead over the visiting Trojans.

But another rash of errors proved costly for Sonoma and sophomore pitcher Zoe Gaarder, who turned in a solid effort filling in for ill junior mound ace Megan McNeilly, as the Trojan girls took advantage of the miscues and posted an 8-3 win.

Pacing the Lady Dragons were sophomore Juliana Gutierrez's single and two RBIs; freshman Lindsey Rocha's single and RBI; and a single each by sophomores Riley Ellis-Reis and Kendall Ashe, and frosh Amber Rose and Samantha Richards, who was recently called up from Sonoma junior varsity team.

The Sonoma varsity girls, who competed in the weekend's Ukiah Tournament - results not available at presstime - will host SCL foe El Molino at 4 p.m. this Thursday, May 5, at the high school field.
