LGBT - Let's get beyond this
Editor, Index-Tribune:
On July 14, California Gov. Brown signed into law SB48 which requires public schools to teach student about the positive societal contributions made by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LBGT) community. Although laudable, it obviously requires that school teachers identify the sexual orientation of those being discussed. Am I mistaken that we now live in a world in which one's sexual orientation, age, race, gender, religion, marital status or disability is irrelevant?
I would have dreaded to read a TV Guide article written as follows: "Bill Cosby (a 74-year-old, African-American, heterosexual male) and Chaz Bono (an able-bodied, vertically-challenged, 42-year-old Caucasian, Christian, transgender individual) will be making cameo appearances on Two and a Half Men, starring Charlie Sheen (a thrice-divorced, narcissistic and dysfunctional paranoid schizophrenic, drug-addicted, sexaholic male).
Maybe we can do without labels.
