John Frederick Salz

In Sonoma, John Frederick Salz died Aug. 24, 2011, after courageously fighting an undiagnosed neurological disease. He was 60.

Born on Sept. 6, 1950, to Ada Remmel Salz and Joseph W. Salz, John was a native of Healdsburg. He spent most of his life in Sonoma County, growing up in the Alexander Valley and Dry Creek regions. He worked at Sonoma Valley Hospital for the last 22 years, is "day job." By night, John was a musician/songwriter extraordinaire and touched many of us with his music. He also loved flying and air shows.

He had an easy smile, an amazing sense of humor and always made time for others.

The following is a verse from the last song he wrote:

Never knew how many good friends I had

Till so many good things just went bad

People sending food, people sending love

People sending hope from heaven above

All these angels here that I see

Each and everyone is a hero to me

John is survived by his brother, Joe (Peggy) and niece Jodie Salz; and is also survived by numerous cousins and countless friends.

John died while in the care of very close friends and loved ones.

We will all miss his ready smile, kind spirit and beautiful music.

We believe that John is up in his favorite plane, with autopilot ON, strumming his guitar with his dog, Keesha, as co-pilot.

Friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life and a tribute to John on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building, 126 First St. W., Sonoma, CA.

Donation may be made in his name to: UCSF Foundation: In memory of John Salz, Neurology Fund, P.O. Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145-0339; or to Hospice By The Bay, 190 W. Napa St., Sonoma, CA 95476.

John was the most amazing masters of harmony that I have ever met. Besides that, his guitar work would always make me drop my jaw. Good Lord, how could anyone be that intuitive and HOT? I met John through my dear friend Kay Irvine. As superior as John's ear was, he was always ever so patient with me when teaching me the correct...and I mean absolutely the CORRECT vocal harmony. It's a story I've shared with Kay, but the best compliment I've ever received about my voice, in thirty years of singing professionally, came from John. It was after the Christmas benefit that Kay and Dayna put on from Aroma Roasters in Santa Rosa's Railroad Square every year. At the end of the gig he said, "So, you were on pitch all night. What's up with that?" I'd never heard more precious praise. I will think of John every time I sing and strive for that compliment from him again...I do believe that he'll find a way to let me know.
'Love you and miss you, John.
