Heritage olive tree

May 30, 2011 - 02:42 PM
Thursday, Nancy Cherniss' fourth-grade class at Woodland Star Charter School planted an olive tree that is a descendent from one of the original mission olive trees planted at the missions. Shea Quirt loosens the soil around the roots of this mission olive sapling, a direct descendent of the trees planted in California missions by the padres in the 1700s. Watching are, from left, Emma Joseph-Phllips, Annie Robichaud and Lilly Toulze. Each fourth-grade student took a turn at shoveling dirt into the container.
