Heffernan trims R&B to claim men’s Benny hoops playoffs title
After chasing front-running R&B Custom Builders through the Sonoma Valley Men’s Recreational Basketball’s Jack Benny (39-and-over) Sunday Night League’s regular season and into the playoffs, Heffernan Insurance Brokers finally succeeded in ovetaking them at the most crucial time.
The second-seeded Heffernan Insurance Brokers rallied from a seven-point first-half deficit to beat regular-season champion and top-seeded R&B Custom Builders 72-62 Sunday night at the Altimira Middle School gym and claimed their second Jack Benny League playoffs title in the past four years.
Leading Heffernan were Kevin Jaggie’s 16 points, Devin Ajax’s and Clem Moore’s 15 each, Jerome Baker’s 11 with three treys, Brian Stephenson’s seven, Pete Ahern’s six and Steve Matuszak’s two. R&B was paced by Brian Thomas’ game-high 26 points, Al Martinson’s 13, Steve Rowland’s 11, Mike Sangiacomo’s six, Ron Hall’s and Danny Dwyer’s four apiece.
In Sunday’s consolation game, La Salette edged Patt’s Copy World 59-54, led by Don Fowler’s game-high 21 points, Scott Dykstra’s 10, Kenton Lewis’ nine, Mike Glasbrenner’s seven, Manny Azevedo’s six and Don Codding’s five. Pacing Patt’s were Mike Brennan’s and Dave Studdert’s 16 points each, Mark Fidler’s eight, Jim Hess’ and Scott Summers’ six apiece, and Dan Flohr’s two.
