George Will was right

Aug 25, 2011 - 03:06 PM

Editor, Index-Tribune:

The brutal violence at last week's 49ers game was disturbing and appalling.

There is no place for such behavior in a civilized society, but perhaps our society isn't civilized. Those incidents raise the question of how to prevent them in the future and many solutions have been put forth - some reasonable and some not. Blame has been cast upon alcohol, drugs, gangs, peer pressure, testosterone, stupidity, team rivalries, etc. There will doubtless be an untold number of meetings to decide what to do.

American journalist and sports pundit George Will once humorously wrote, "Football incorporates the two worse elements of American society: violence punctuated by committee meetings."

If he only knew.
