From Mass. to GE with love

Jun 20, 2011 - 02:46 PM

Last week my sweetie and I sat on the sidelines at Xtreme Sport Dance studio watching the students drop and comb, then shimmy with the triple step Suzy-Q. Or something like that.

We weren't listening as much as we were watching. With salsa moves far too advanced for us, the entertainment was purely visual. My eyes were particularly trained on one lovely and lively young couple who were stunning dancers.

After the dance, we followed these two down the moonlit streets to a little out-of-the-way restaurant, Bergamot. But you won't find that cozy cafe here, nor will you find the full moon, and sadly not the couple. All that was last week in Cambridge, Mass. And the couple? Those two could clearly wow the crowds this Saturday night at Glen Ellen's annual Firefighter's Dance.

Alas Gabe Holbrow, our son, and his beautiful bride Hilary remain in Massachusetts. Distance will keep them from our dance, but I'd guess that's not an excuse for you who are reading this column. So, as ever, be there, or be square.

And we promise you won't need to salsa or even two-step to the "Achy Breaky Heart" (as we may do, missing our "kids" so much).

Here's all the good news direct from our Fire Chief, Peter Van Fleet: The dance is this Saturday, June 25, doors open at 6 p.m. Dinner begins at 7, but early arrival gives you a chance to choose your table and check out the terrific auction items. Until 9 p.m. the firefighters will be serving tri-tip and chicken marinated in the secret firehouse sauce, along with beans, salads, side dishes and desserts.

Peter promises you're gonna love dancing to Doc Kraft and company, the popular band from last year.

A full bar is offered specializing in Lagunitas beer and Benziger wine, with plenty of soft drinks and water for designated drivers. Dancing continues after dinner. Tickets are $25 for adults, with children under 12 free. You can get your tickets at the door, but if you want to be included in the door prize drawing, mail your check to 13445 Arnold Drive, Glen Ellen, 95442.

Heck, even if you can't be there, send in your donation. Of course we'll miss you, but this is our fire department's biggest fundraiser of the year and I know you want to support these amazing men and women who do so much for us all.

The following week, it's Kids Kamp at the Glen Ellen Community Church. This year the church folks are bringing kitchen fun to youngsters ages 4 through 11 with Shake It Up Cafe. Kids Kamp runs June 27 to 30 from 6 to 8 in the evening. To register or to find out more, call the church office at 996-1479 or email kidskamp@live.com.

Sandy Zimmermann, Ph.D., a member of the church and a licensed clinical social worker is offering parents of preschoolers a free workshop during the first three nights of Kids Kamp. For information and signups, contact Sandy at 996-0361 right away.

I'm eager to share your good news: write me at P.O. Box 518, GE, 95442, email me at Creekbottom@earthlink.net or call 996-5995.
