Four former Dragons playing in Kiwanis all-star grid classic

Football benefit set for Saturday, July 23, at SRHS Nevers Field

Jul 11, 2011 - 01:52 PM

While baseball dominates the summer sports scene, there’s one annual Redwood Empire midsummer night on which the center of attention turns to the gridiron in the form of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Rosa’s all-star football classic.

The 38th Richard Bigham Memorial Senior All-Star Football Game – featuring recently graduated Redwood Empire high school seniors from both the Sonoma County League and North Bay League – kicks off at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, at Santa Rosa High School’s Ernie Nevers Field.

Playing for the SCL all-stars will be four 2011 Sonoma Valley High School graduates, who were 2010 all-league standouts for the Dragons – Sean Daly, Joey Casias, Omar Paz and Ray Mellinger.

Daly is a 5-foot, 10-inch, 165-pound SCL first-team all-league outside linebacker; Casias is a 6-0, 170-pound second-team all-league defensive back; Paz is a 6-2, 235-pound second-team all-league defensive lineman; and Mellinger is a 6-3, 230-pound second-team all-league offensive lineman.

Gates for the senior football classic at SRHS’s Nevers Field open for ticket sales at 7 p.m., with presale tickets for the all-star football benefit available through the Kiwanis game director Leonard Sevall at 546-2146, or at T&B Sports Inc., 2049 W. Steele Lane, Santa Rosa (544-2433).
