The funeral cortege for Schell-Vista Fire Chief Mitch Mulas was southbound on Broadway Tuesday afternoon after a funeral Mass at St. Francis Solano.

Overflow crowds packed the church along with Fr. Roberts Hall, where there was a large-screen TV, and the school playground where almost 200 more watched the funeral on a large outdoor TV.

Firefighters from more than 30 companies around the county along with Napa and Marin counties paid their last respects to the "Chief."

See Friday's Index-Tribune for more on the funeral and more pictures.

This is a great loss for the Sonoma Valley and the entire fire service. Chief Mulas was a mentor for many, including me. With the passing of Al Mazza and Mitch Mulas, the Valley has lost a great deal. But, everyone can take comfort in the knowledge that the many, many dedicated firefighters they inspired and trained remain ready to serve.
