Fall Dragons start early 2011 season workouts Monday

Physicals, paperwork needed to play, ‘rush’

Aug 8, 2011 - 03:01 PM

With possibly the earliest opening to the non-college school year in memory, set for Wednesday, Aug. 17, the Sonoma Valley High School’s fall athletic programs knew they would be in a “hurried-up offensive mode” in preparing for their 2011 seasons, which, though its hard to comprehend, have arrived.

The fall Dragons will begin their 2011 jump-start when pre-season workouts officially begin this Monday, Aug. 15, in football, girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ cross country, boys’ and girls’ water polo and girls’ tennis and golf.

Any student-athlete wanting to participate in Sonoma’s 2011 fall sports programs needs to have all her or his paperwork – including current mandatory physical examinations, proof of insurance, completed emergency cards, signed (student and parent) code of conduct forms and paid fees – completed before practicing.

Paperwork, paid fees and proof of physical for all Sonoma fall athletes can be turned in during Sonoma’s “rush” program taking place this Saturday, Aug. 13, or currently from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the SVHS student activities office.

Football gear will be distributed in the locker room at 6 p.m. today, tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 10, and Thursday, Aug. 11, as well as at Saturday’s, Aug. 13, “rush” session.

The Sonoma football program – under the direction of longtime varsity head coach Mick O’Meara and defensive coordinator Mike Mulas – will send its varsity and jayvee squads to Santa Rosa High School’s Ernie Nevers Field for their annual home-and-away preseason scrimmages against the hosting Panthers on Friday, Aug. 26 – jayvees begin at 6, followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.

After a bye the weekend of Sept. 2, the Dragons will kick off their 2011 football season by hosting nonleague Terra Linda – jayvees start at 5, and the varsity begins at 7:30 p.m. – on Friday, Sept. 9, at Arnold Field.
