Fall Dragons leaping into play, spikers host Thursday

Using weekend scrimmages to hone their skills for the start of the 2011 fall season, the Sonoma Valley High School football boys will still have to wait another 10 days before kicking off their campaign. But Sonoma's volleyball girls get to open their preseason nonleague schedule this evening with matches against Tamalpais in Mill Valley.
The Lady Dragon spikers, who scrimmaged in the annual Napa Jamboree on Saturday, will host Justin-Siena of Napa this Thursday, Sept. 1, in Pfeiffer Gym, with the freshman starting at 4, the junior varsity beginning at 5, and the varsity playing at 6:30 p.m.
Before they open their Sonoma County League volleyball season against defending champion Analy on Tuesday, Sept. 13, in Sebastopol, the Lady Dragons will play at Terra Linda next Tuesday, Sept. 6. The Lady Draons will then host Napa Thursday night, Sept. 8, in Pfeiffer Gym.
Sonoma's varsity and junior varsity football teams participated in last Friday's annual home-and-away preseason scrimmages against Santa Rosa at the Panthers' Ernie Nevers Field.
But the Dragon gridders, who have their only bye this weekend, won't get to "play for real" until Friday, Sept. 9, when they kick off their 2011 season by hosting nonleague Terra Linda at Arnold Field, with the jayvees beginning at 5 and the varsity starting at 7:30 p.m.

Sonoma's girl golfers tee-off their season taking on Analy in their SCL opener in Sebastopol today, before traveling to league foe Healdsburg this Thursday, Sept. 1.
The tennis Lady Dragon girls start their SCL schedule at Petaluma on Thursday, Sept. 8.

Sonoma's cross country boys' and girls' teams will hold their annual Cross Country Alumni Meet on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 5:30 p.m. on the Maxwell Farms Regional Park course.
All former cross country Dragons or Sonoma athletes, as well as any runner wanting to participate, are welcome and should arrive at the course at least 15 minutes before the race.

Sonoma's water polo boys' and girls' teams - whose new coach wasn't officially announced as of presstime - open their season facing Redwood Empire League rival Cardinal Newman in Santa Rosa on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
