Though there's still more than a month left in summer, autumn has arrived at Sonoma Valley High School in the form of the 2011 fall sports season, which officially opened yesterday and will be followed by the new school year, which begins tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 17.

The fall Dragons will compete in seven sports, including football, girls' volleyball, boys' and girls' soccer, boys' and girls' cross country, boys' and girls' water polo and girls' tennis and golf.

Any student-athlete wanting to participate in Sonoma's 2011 fall sports programs needs to have all her or his paperwork - including current mandatory physical examinations, proof of insurance, completed emergency cards, signed (student and parent) code of conduct forms and paid fees - completed before practicing.

Paperwork, paid fees and proof of physical for all Sonoma fall athletes can be turned in from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the SVHS student activities office.

Sonoma's water polo program is still looking for a head coach in the wake of former head coach Ken Noren having to suddenly step down because of a conflict involving his new work-schedule, though he will assist the Dragon boys' and girls' teams on a part-time basis.

Anyone interested in the coaching position should, as soon as possible, contact athletic director Bob Midgley at 933-4010, ext. 5272, or 694-0799.

Sonoma's varsity and junior varsity football teams continue their Monday through Friday preseason practices at 3 p.m., with the freshman gridders starting their daily workout sessions today.

•••

The volleyball Lady Dragons continue their tryout sessions in Pfeiffer Gym for the varsity, jayvee and frosh teams from 4 to 6 p.m today, tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 17, and for jayvees and frosh on Thursday, Aug. 18, with the varsity working out from 6 to 8 p.m.

This Friday, Aug. 19, there will be a 6:30 p.m. meeting in the Pavilion for all the girls who made the Sonoma squads and their parents.

Sonoma's cross country boys' and girls' teams will hold 3:45 p.m. practice sessions today at their Maxwell Farms Regional Park.
