With the opportunity, before the Sonoma County League season begins, to play one more nonleague game in the midst of all the recent rainouts, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball boys traveled to Santa Rosa on Friday to play perennial North Bay League power Cardinal Newman.

Despite a strong six-inning pitching performance by junior Michael Hernandez, and a combined six-hit effort by senior Kevin Deely and sophomore Jonah Son, the Dragons again committed some costly errors and couldn’t plate enough runners as Newman pulled out a 4-2 win.

Sonoma was paced by Son’s three-for-three including a double and run scored; Deely’s three-for-four with a double and a run; juniors Chris Swanson’s and Sam Keechler’s single and RBI each; and junior Sam Morgan’s and sophomore Brennan Cole’s single apiece.

The Dragons (3-4) open their SCL season tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, March 30, at Windsor, before returning home to host league foe Healdsburg at 7 p.m. this Friday, April 1, at Arnold Field.

In a rescheduled rainout, the Dragon boys will host Eureka in 2 p.m. nonleague game at Arnold Field this Saturday, April 2.

The varsity Dragons will be holding their inaugural Sonoma Green and White Alumni Baseball Game at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at Arnold Field, with a pre-game get-together and alumni batting practice session set for Friday, April 8.

Any Dragon alumnus interested in playing can contact Sonoma varsity head coach Don Lyons at 996-7030 or dlyons@sonomavly.k12.ca.us.
