After four decades of annual league battles, Sonoma Valley and Casa Grande High Schools faced each other as Sonoma County League foes for the final time Friday night at Arnold Field.
Along with Windsor, Casa is switching from the SCL to the North Bay League for all sports starting in the fall of 2012 on the growth basis of their student bodies, with Piner and Elsie Allen moving to the SCL at the same time.
Hoping to pull an upset in their last SCL showdown with the defending champion, the Dragons opened the game with a quick first-down before suddenly stalling and Casa struck quickly for a 7-0 lead.
Sonoma then picked up two first downs, but after a pass interception – the first of three on the day – the Gauchos put together a drive that ate up the remainder of the first-quarter and upped their advantage to 13-0 early in the second-quarter.
Though the Dragons’ defense created back-to-back chances to get back into the game with pass interceptions by senior Chris Swanson and junior Skylar Marciel, they couldn’t capitalize on the turnovers and the Gauchos increased their lead to 28-0 after three-quarters and turned into a 35-0 final score.
With the loss, Sonoma’s overall record was evened at 4-4 and dropped to 1-3 in the SCL – Casa improved to 6-2 and 3-1 – and the Dragons hit the road for their last regular-season game at longtime league rival Petaluma this Friday, Nov. 4.

Without the services of injured starting quarterback Mitch Hood, Sonoma’s junior varsity football team dropped a 22-0 decision to Casa Grande Friday evening at Arnold Field.
The freshman football Dragons, who lost to visiting Analy last Thursday, will host Casa in a 5 p.m. game at Arnold Field this Thursday, Nov. 3.
Dragons of the Week
The Dragons of the Week in Sonoma’s 35-0 SCL loss to Casa Grande Friday night at Arnold Field were Skylar Marciel and Sam Keechler.
Marciel, a 6-foot, 170-pound junior outside linebacker, turned in a strong all-around defense effort, intercepting a pass and also stepping up as a special-teams player.
Keechler, a 5-11, 170-pound senior wide receiver, made clutch 25-yard pass reception and run for a first-down inside Casa’s 30-yard line, and also was solid on special teams.
The Dragons of the Week are sponsored by Eraldi’s Men’s Wear and Shoes, and Broadway Market.
