Literally overcoming hurdles en route to standout regular and post 2011 track and field seasons, Sonoma Valley High School’s incoming senior and junior Sarah Summers and Greg Maggioncalda, respectively, were recently honored as All-Empire athletes by ThePress Democrat.
Following up an eye-opening sophomore season, Summers was named to the girls’ All-Empire first-team on the heels of winning a string of regular-season girls’ 100- and 300-hurdle events and, at the Sonoma County League championships, capturing second- and fourth-place finishes in 18.11 and 51.86 seconds, respectively. She also took sixth in and triple-jump at 31 feet, 9 inches.

Summers then reached the prestigious North Coast Section Meet of Champions at Edwards Stadium on the University of California, Berkeley, campus with her fifth-place finish in the triple-jump with a leap of 33-feet at the NCS Redwood Empire Area Meet, where she also was 11th in the 100 hurdles in 18.28.
During his fast-improving and impact sophomore season, Maggioncalda, who was a boys’ All-Empire second-team selection, claimed a 300-hurdles third-place in 42.83 and 110-hurdles fourth in 17.04 at the SCL boys’ championships.
In the 300-hurdles event at the NCS Redwood Empire Area Meet, Maggioncalda claimed a solid third-place with a personal-record time of 41.90, which placed him seventh on Sonoma’s all-time boys’ 300-meter hurdles list, and qualified him for the Meet of Champions.
Both Summers and Maggioncalda also raced with their respective relay teams.
