Yesterday afternoon was a bright one for the young Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball and softball teams.

The Sonoma baseball boys hit the road for a key nonleague showdown with fellow Division 3 foe Novato and, though they could muster only two hits, they still were able to post a 5-0 win, as senior pitching ace Sam Alton continued his mound mastery with a 65-pitch three-hitter.

The first-place Dragons face second-place, and longtime Sonoma County League rival, Casa Grande at 4 p.m. today in Petaluma.

On the heels of winning the Ukiah Tournament championship, Sonoma’s softball girls got back to some serious Sonoma County League play and posted an efficient 8-0 win over visiting El Molino at the high school field behind junior pitching ace Megan McNeilly’s four-hitter, and a combined six-hit effort by sophomore Ashley Vail and freshman Lindsey Rocha.
