City cancels special council meeting

Jun 24, 2011 - 03:23 PM

The special City Council meeting set for Monday, June 27, to discuss a state grant to pay for connecting Rancho de Sonoma mobile home park to city water, has been canceled.

City officials learned Friday that the state has determined it better suits the needs of all parties to contract for the water connection directly with the owners of Rancho de Sonoma.

State officials informed the city that Proposition 84 bond funds, which are used to provide the grants, can be issued through a funding agreement directly to Rancho de Sonoma, and not through the City of Sonoma.

City Manager Linda Kelly said the ability for the state to deal directly with the mobile home park owners will streamline the process and relieves the city of some future staff time and paperwork. Additionally, the documents that the city will still need to approve and execute do not need to be acted upon by the council before June 30, thus eliminating the urgency of scheduling a council meeting for June 27.

The connection to city water has been driven by EPA requirements that the mobile home park owners address an arsenic contamination problem in the park's water well that has forced residents to rely on bottled drinking water for much of the past two years.
