Carl E. Berry

Date Published: Jun 23, 2011 - 04:00 PM

Carl E. Berry, born in Dalhart, Texas, in 1937, passed away after a long illness on June 6, 2011, at the age of 74.

He was a graduate of Napa High School. In his youth, he and his friends enjoyed cruising The Wright Spot and drag racing. He was an avid fisherman and dedicated tinker.

After retirement, he loved to garden, travel, camp in the comforts of his trailer while watching a NSACAR race. Doran Beach, at Bodega Bay, was a favorite getaway. He especially loved his morning cup of Joe. Besides Sonoma, where he lived for the past 36 years, he lived and worked for several years at Lake Tahoe. He retired from Mare Island Naval Shipyard where, as a member of the Boilermakers Union, he worked as a welder. He was especially proud of the work that he did there and in Hawaii on several submarines including the USS Kamehameha and USS Los Angeles, and the decommissioning of the USS Nautilus. He also served proudly in the California National Guard.

Carl is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia; sons, Tim, Bryan and Bruce; brothers, Dennis and David; grandchildren, Neil, Josh, Amy, Morgan, Mark, Shawna, Kayley, Zach and Becca; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack and his mother, Minnie; son, Chris; brothers, Bill, Bob, Jack and Don.

Carl was a good, honest, hard-working man. He loved his family and they loved him. Nothing greater can be said about a person. He will be greatly missed by those who his life touched.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted on July 9, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Sonoma Alliance Church, 125 E. Watmaugh Road., Sonoma, CA 95476. Bring your memories.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name to Hospice By The Bay, 190 W. Napa St., Sonoma, CA 95476, would be greatly appreciated.
