Canine discrimination?
Editor, Index-Tribune:
I was saddened and appalled with the request of City Council member Joanne Sanders to agendize a discussion on an ordinance to ban pit bulls within the City of Sonoma. As a person experienced with working with pit bulls for many years, I find this potential ordinance discriminatory. As with humans, the behavior of animals is often related to the environment in which they live. The pit bulls with whom I have worked have been fun, active, loyal, and affectionate, similar behaviors you find in other dogs.
Another concern I have relates to the issue of diversity, something the City of Sonoma has respected. I find banning a particular breed of dog contrary to the diversity that we value. It is like labeling someone based on his/her ethnicity or the religion practiced. As a resident of Sonoma for 28 years, I do not support any ordinance that discriminates against a person or an animal. I encourage the City Council not to spend valuable time discussing such an ordinance since there are so many more important matters to address.
