CHP eyes medical problem in fatal

Jul 7, 2011 - 05:45 PM

The California Highway Patrol is looking into whether a medical condition may have played a part in a fatal solo vehicle accident Monday morning at the intersection of Fifth Street West and Leveroni Road.

In the accident, a car driven by Carolyn Dusharme, 81, of Sonoma, was southbound on Fifth Street West at about 9:50 a.m. and blew through the intersection at Leveroni Road. Dusharme's 2001 Mitsubishi Gallant went through the guard rail at the end of Fifth Street West, missed several large trees before plunging into Sonoma Creek and turning over onto the driver's side.

Officer Jared Paulson, with the CHP's Napa office, said Dusharme was dead at the scene.

Paulson said that, based on witness statements, the CHP hasn't ruled out a medical condition as a cause of the accident and death. And he said the incident is still under investigation.
