Armin Winter Hofstetter
Dec. 26, 1950-Aug. 15, 2011
Musician and artist Armin Hofstetter was born and raised in Zurich, Switzerland. Armin was coached to learn classical music on the clarinet and flute at an early age. One of his early influences was Chris Barber who performed regularly in Zurich and soon he turned to the saxophone, playing jazz, blues and rock. Armin came to the United States in 1978 and pursued music with session work in Los Angeles before moving to the Bay Area.
He came to Sonoma 20 years ago, when he was a member of the Dynatones, then joined Melvin Seals on tour with his JGB Band. As the lead vocalist, the band recorded their "Welcome to Our World" CD live at the House of Blues in LA. In 2009, he returned to his beloved Switzerland to join The Dude Durst "Back to the Groove" tour.
While performing in New Mexico and visiting galleries in Santa Fe, he developed a passion for painting and began a series of Native American portraits noted for their large scale and vivid colors. In May 2008, he had a one-man show in Sonoma at Charles Creek.
Armin has played with many local musicians and remains in our hearts with his music and art.
Armin is survived by his mother, Gertrude Hofstetter; sister, Verena Wehli; son, Roman Hubmann; and grandson, Jaydon.
Donations in his honor can be made to Hospice By The Bay.
