Sometime last fall, I agreed to go steelhead fishing in Oregon with my friend and fishing buddy Steve Kyle. He said February was a great month, and with out thinking, I said OK. He also persuaded Les Vadasz and Jim Powers to come too. Les and Jim are such sensible guys. I don't know what possessed them … or me.

While the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has been planting lakes around our area for many years in order to enhance a local winter trout fishery, it announced this week that it will begin planting rainbow trout (triploids) in Lake Mendocino for the first time this month.

Last weekend's rains pumped lots of fresh water into the North Bay, which automatically improves the sturgeon action at the usual locations including the Pump House, China Camp, the mouth of Sonoma Creek and even the Napa River.

Except for the hardcore crazy anglers, the next few days are going to be good for sitting at home oiling your reels, sorting out your tackle or watching fishing shows on TV. We need the rain, so we have to accept this as the price.

Anglers should head north to the Sacramento River near Redding, the Trinity, the Klamath and even the Pit River for good trout and steelhead fishing this week. The waters are low, but the fish are in, and the action has been good for most anglers.
